Some great news for the Zombie genre as Danny Boyle and Alex Garland are teaming up for an epic sequle to thier 2002 zombie horror 28 Days Later.
After more than twenty years since the release of the zombie outbreak film, 28 Days Later, a new sequel is in the works. The creators of the original movie, director Boyle and writer Garland, have joined forces once again for the possibility of a 28 Years Later. THR dropped the news this week that the deadly duo are othering the rights to potential buyers, such as studios and streaming services. The studios really should be fighting tooth and claw over this opertunity, as 28 Years Later is being pitched as a trilogy.
The original film starrred Cillian Murphy as a bicycle courier who awakens from a coma to discover the accidental release of a highly contagious, aggression-inducing virus has caused the breakdown of society. Naomie Harris, Christopher Eccleston, Megan Burns, and Brendan Gleeson appear in supporting roles. It went on to gross $84.6 million on an $8 million budget and also spawned a secufull sequel 28 Weeks Later in 2007.
Whether any of the (surviving) cast from the original will return is yet to be seen, but with both Boyle and Garland onboard, your almost gaurnteed a great film, with duo working togther on The Beach (2000) (Garland rote the novel) and Sunshine (2007).
“Boyle is attached to direct the first installment. Garland would write all three. The budget for each movie would be in the $75 million range.”
28 Days revitlatised the Zombie sub-genre, proving that fast and frantic zombies could more terrorfying than the slow and slumbering monsters of years before. Could 28 Years Later do the same in a post-covid world?
