Producer Roy Lee Teases ‘Friday the 13th’ News Soon!

by | Aug 9, 2022

It feels like a lifetime since Jason Voorhees last slashed his way across the sliver screen in 2009’s Friday the 13th re-make, but they may very well be some good news coming our way. That is according to producer Roy Lee, who chatted with Bloody Disgusting’s The Boo Crew Podcast this week.

Producer of hits such as IT (2017) , Blair Witch (2016) and Poltergeist (2015), Roy Lee indicated that a return to Crystal Lake is very likely round the corner. The franchise has been in turmoil for half a decade as the original movie’s director (Sean Cunningham), and the original movie’s writer (Victor Miller) have been locked in a savage dispute over who owns the original script. The result of which, only went to muddy the dark waters at Camp Crystal Lake.

A court sided with Miller, but Cunningham and Miller’s attorneys are still very much at logger heads over who owns Jason. Miller may control the script and characters from his original movie script, but Jason, his hockey mask; which has pretty much defined him and the franchise since Part III, and the title remain with Cunningham. Whilst Miller can make as many films as he wants, his Jason can’t be any older than the young boy that appeared in his script, leaving him with very little to play with apart from prequels or TV shows in the vein of Bates Motel, which would actually be quite interesting.

Roy Lee , however, has some news up his sleeve, which he’s not quite ready to share with us…

“That one is something that I would love to talk about. You may be hearing something by year’s end… on that front.”

There has been many people who have shown interest in bringing Jason back to the cinemas, including LeBron James back in 2018, and horror icon Stephen King in 2020.

What ever happens, it seems that Friday the 13th will be returning soon. Whether that’s a new film, TV series or something else entirely (how about a stage show?). One way or another, in the next 52 years it’ll be in the public domain, and then anyone could make a Friday the 13th film.
