Pilou Asbaek Joins ‘Salem’s Lot’ as Richard Straker

by | Sep 27, 2021

Game of Thrones star Pilou Asbaek is the latest name to be added to the roster for Gary Dauberman’s horror remake Salem’s Lot. According to THR,  the Danish actor will be taking on the role of the villainous Richard Straker, the human partner of vampire Kurt Barlow, who instigates the slow decimation of the sleepy little town.

The actor has just finished work on Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and will soon start filming with other cast members such as Lewis Pullman, Bill Camp, Makenzie Leigh and Alfre Woodard. This big screen version of Stephen King’s 1975 novel has yet to announce who will be transforming into Barlow, but our bets are all on William Sadler, who announced himself as filming, but has yet to be formally announced by the studio.

Asbaek addition to the cast is a little odd, as Starker has always been portrayed by much older gentleman, and I can’t help but feel that his casting comes through his sudden rise to fame through Game of Thrones, rather than his appropriateness for the role.  In the book, Straker is described as a bald man with an indeterminate accent. Despite his outwardly jovial and charming persona, there is an undercurrent of mockery that betrays his evil nature. He is presented as a Satanist and is a devote thrall to Barlow and paves the way for Barlow’s arrival in the town. In the original TV mini series in 1979, James Mason played Straker as a pompous British man, whilst Donald Sutherland played the role, in 2004, as a play American with an underlining menace.

Salem’s lot will be slouching into theaters on September 9th, 2022.
