Mike Flanagan is working on ‘The Dark Tower’ TV Series

by | Dec 8, 2022

The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass creator Mike Flanagan is currently working on a brand new adaption of Stephen King’s epic fantasy series The Dark Tower. The director already has a couple of King adaption sunder his belt, with Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep proving that he has what it takes to pull off this difficult series.

This is not the first attempt at turning the novels into a live action adaptions, the 2017 film adaption went through production hell, just to push out a wet fart that had very little to do with King’s story. Original, there was a plan in place to produce a series of films and TV shows that would have weaved the many stories into a biteable chunks of media, with various filmmakers and studios at different times. These included Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, and Lionsgate Entertainment. The adaptation went through three major phases of planning: with J. J. Abrams from 2007 to 2009, Ron Howard from 2010 to 2015. The final film that came out of this mess was pretty awfull.

Flanagan spoke with Variety this week confirmed that The Dark Tower project was part of the Flanagan and his producing partner Trevor Macy’s new deal at Amazon. He said

“Predating our deal with Amazon, we acquired the rights to ‘The Dark Tower,’ which if you know anything about me, you know it has been my Holy Grail of a project for most of my life… We actually have those rights carved out of our Amazon deal, which doesn’t mean that they can’t or won’t get behind it at some point — you don’t know. But that’s something we’ve been developing ourselves and are really passionate about finally getting it up on its feet at some point.”

The director envisions a five part TV show with two standalone feature to follow on from that, a plan that sounds a little messy but hopefully the type of thing Amazon would love to have under their belt. Flanagan also confirmed that he has spoken with King about the project, something he has done before with both his other projects.

“This happened because I sent him a very, very detailed outline of what I wanted to do with it… And it was in response to that, that he gave us the rights. A project like this, I wouldn’t want to be involved in it at all If we were taking it in a direction that was going to be blasphemous to the Stephen King material, but he’s been very, very supportive and very excited about what we’d like to do with it.”

Whilst the planning is ongoing, nothing ahs been green lit just yet, but we are all hoping that Roland and his Ka-Tet will make their way onto Amazon’s streaming services soon. More news soon.
