How Old is Michael Myers?

How Old is Michael Myers?

by | Jun 24, 2022

When John Carpenter brought the Boogeyman to life 40 years ago, little did he know just how long the dreaded “shape” would be terrifying audiences all over the worlds. And Yet, here we are, in the 2020’s, and Michael Myers is still a un-stoppable force on the big screen.

Whilst there are plenty of horror series out there that span numerous films and decades, there’s something very special about the simplicity of the Halloween franchise, and how just one man in a mask can still make a hug impact on modern audiences. But one of the most fascinating things about Halloween is  how the films have always aged him along side the watching audiences, with (almost) all the films giving him an age relevant to the very first film back in 1978.

So, just how old is Michael Myers? We examine the complicated history and various timelines of the Halloween movies, as well as place Michael Myers’ age at every step of his murderous decades long rampage. Here is How Old is Michael Myers?

Time Line One

The original film series ran from 1978 untill 1995, where Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers was the final film in the this primary time line.

Halloween (1978)

John Carpenter’s classic horror began on a cold Halloween night in 1963. When Michael Myers murdered his sister Judith, he was only six years old, according to his psychiatrist Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasence). It’s fifteen years later that Myers escapes from Smith’s Grove Sanitarium, making him only 21. However, a mistake in the credits has some confusion over the years. In the films credits, actor Tony Moran is listed as Michael Myers (age 23). Moran played Myers for the brief moment you see the killer without his mask. Despite the confusion, it’s pretty canon that Loomis was correct on Myers age.

Fixing the issues from the first film, Myers’ age is listed in the 1981 sequel as 21.  The film follows the events of the original film, occuring on the same night as the original, meaning that Myers age should be the same. The film ends with Myser engulfed in flames, leading to a much larger gap between the next Halloween sequel.

Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988) - Horror Land

Halloween III: Season of the Witch was supposed to take the Halloween franchise into a differnet direction, but when the fans reacted badly to the non-Michael Myers film, the fourth film returned to continue the shapes story. Set a decade after the 1978 original (and, technically Halloween II) Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers follow the Shape in his 31st year, as he tries to kill his neice.

Being released one year after Halloween 4, Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers is also set one year later, with Myers now being 32 years old. In his fourth outing, Myers continues to hunt down his neice Jamie Lloyd. As the film closed, Michael escapes from prison with the help from a myserious man in black.

Curse of Michael Myers (1995) went through a very troubled production and ended up with two very different films, the original release and the recently released Producers Cut. In either version, Michael Myers returns six years later from Halloween 5, making the films events happening on the same year of release. In Curse, Myers is now 38 years old.

Time Line Two

The second time line reboots the franchise from Halloween 2, forgetting about 4-6 completely. Michael is still related to Laurie strode, but she does not die and leave a niece, instead she lives to have a teen son, who is the target of the shape.

Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998) - Horror Land

Halloween H20 (1998)

Halloween: H20 is the first film that breaks the Halloween timeline in order to retcon the complex story the original series created. Brining back Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode, the film is set 20 years after the original 1978 film, making Michael Myers 41 years old.

Halloween: Resurrection (2002) - Horror Land

Resurrection (2002)

Halloween Resurrection continues in the time line of H20, but takes places in two different time frames. At the start, Michael returns to finish off Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) in 2001, meaning Myers is 44 at this point. Then the film fast-forward a year to the “Dangertainment” section of the film, which means that Michela Myers goes one on one with a kung-fu fighting Busta Rhymes at the age of 45.

Time Line Three

The third time line completely reboots the story of Michael Myers, starting the film from the very start, with Michael at the age of 10.

Rob Zombie’s 2007 reboot changes a few things from the original story, looking more deeper into Michael Myers childhood and exploring the themes that drove him to murder. At the time he killed his sister Judith (among others), he is much older being 10 instead of 6, and when he escapes Smith’s Grove Sanitarium and goes on his Halloween rampage, he is 27 years old.

The follow up to Zombies remake, Halloween II, takes place a year later. Meaning that when Michael returns once more, he is 28 years old.

Time Line Four

The fourth timeline recreates the ideas that H20 had, by ignoring the huge majority of Halloween sequels. In this new time line, Laurie Strode, once gain played by Jamie Lee Curtis, is not related to Myers.

With the franchise pretty much on the ropes, Blumhouse and director David Gordon Green decided to give Halloween one last stab. Halloween (2018) continues the original storyline of Michael Myers, withy the film being set 40 years after the original 1978 film. Michael goes on his latest bloody rampage at the age of 61 years old.

Halloween Kills (2021) continues the tradition of the original timeline, by returning to the very first night of Michael’s rampage, taking place on the same night of the 2019 movie, meaning that Myers is still 61 years old during the films events.

Halloween Ends (2022)

The third and final film in the David Gordon Green trilogy, will catch up with it’s 2022 release date, bringing The Shape and Laurie Strode into a contemporary timeline by jumping forward four years, making Myers 65. If they make any more films based on the original time line, we may well be seeing Myers into his 70’s and beyond.
