‘Resident Evil’ Reboot Officially Titled ‘Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City’
The new film will be an adaptation of the first two Resident Evil games and will include main characters from both titles including Chris and Claire Redfield, Jill Valentine, and Leon S. Kennedy.
“Set in the year 1998, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City will tell the events of the city under siege from infected zombies. Both the mansion from Resident Evil 1 and the city itself and police station from Resident Evil 2 will be present in the movie.”
This means that the film will be sticking very close to the games original story, with the Spencer Mansion and the Raccoon City Police Department featuring as the main settings. Very exciting for fans hoping for something a little more on the nose.
Welcome to Raccoon City already has a full cast including Kaya Scodelario (Maze Runner) as Claire Redfield, Hannah John-Kamen (Ant-Man and the Wasp) as Jill Valentine, Robbie Amell (Upload) as Chris Redfield, Tom Hopper (The Umbrella Academy) as Albert Wesker, Avan Jogia (Zombieland: Double Tap) as Leon S. Kennedy, and Neal McDonough (Yellowstone) as William Birkin.
Roberts said about his cast.
I really wanted to go back to the original first two games and recreate the terrifying visceral experience I had when I first played them whilst at the same time telling a grounded human story about a small dying American town that feels both relatable and relevant to today’s audiences.
In another interview he spoke about the films tone and how he wanted to capture the games atmosphere and scares.
The big thing for this movie is tone. The thing I loved about the games is they were just scary as hell and that is very much what I wanted to… That atmosphere — it’s rain, it’s constantly dark, it’s creepy. Raccoon City is kind of this rotten character in the movie and that sort of atmosphere in the games I wanted to put in [the film].
The new Resident Evil Film is certainly shaping up to be something special, with Roberts taking inspiration from John Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13 and The Fog, as both films use isolated settings and follow a “disparate group of characters coming together under siege.”
Welcome to Raccoon City is not the only film RE project currently being worked on. For awhile, it look like the franchise might move over to Netflix TV show, but that was abandoned due to Covid, only to be retooled as a standalone spin off. Netflix are also creating an animated CGI movie called Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness. SO no matter what, we certainly will have our choices of Resident Evil films to choose from.
